I just finished the two-day course Basic Life Support Training under Philippine National Red Cross Davao City Chapter in cooperation with Philippine Nurses Association XI. Ma’am Mikko and Ma’am Timi discussed and trained us matters on how to respond in victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest and Choking- prompt recognition of emergencies that require immediate basic life support, how to advance life support, actions to assess and support airway, breathing and circulation, early defibrillation, how to treat and stabilize victims and other related topics.
Those of us at a safe distance watched the televised images like incidents of Heart Attack, Stroke, Cardiac arrest and choking that all have taken scores of lives, thinking that would have been me, my family, in the community. Heart-related disease is the top 4 leading cause of mortality (death) in Davao and top 1 leading cause of mortality in the Philippines. Choking, on the other hand, is also common. These are some of many concerns. Therefore, everyone should be trained as basic responders to save lives. Someone’s life will be directly impacted by your intervention. Time is critical and minutes counts.
Basic Life Support Training is a refresher course for us as Registered Nurses and one of the requirements if we apply to hospitals together with IV (Intravenous) Training. You have to renew it every year by taking the 2-day course again. I learned a lot from the discussions from how to help Cardiac Arrest or Choking victims, who should be prioritized first, performing CPR, AED… on the first day (June 21). On the second day, we had the 25-item exam. I got 24 and I’m not bragging about it. Lol. After the exam, we had the graded Return Demonstration (simulation) of what we’ve learned.
Just for your information, CPR is a technique of basic life support for the purpose of oxygenating the heart and brain until it backs into normal. This is done for those suffering cardiac and respiratory arrest. I also learned that it is necessary to clear first any airway obstructions like the tip of the tongue or a tooth before CPR can be performed. Learning that weren’t in my mind. Hmmmm… Where might these important information be? So I did something this time in the Internet that I’ve rarely done and started to read. Hehe
Automated External Defibrillator or AED on the other hand is a portable emergency equipment used for Cardiac Arrest. There’s an audio and visual instructions from the unit that analyze the rhythm and determine the need for defibrillator. It will let you or the operator know how to proceed. It is really highly needed especially in mass incident.
In summary, it was an unforgettable experience and an amicable activity.
For those interested, there will be another 2-day course BLS training on July 17 and 18, 2010 at Philippine Red Cross- Davao, Roxas Boulevard, Davao City situated beside Marco Polo Hotel.
