Eight million kids in the Philippines fall short of the normal height and weight for their age. That, according to Kraft Chiz Whiz’s Senior Brand Manager, Paulo Serrano, is the inspiration behind Kraft Cheez Whiz’s Palamantasan sa Sarap.
Palamantasan sa Sarap is an advocacy campaign of Kraft Cheez Whiz in cooperation with the Department of Education and the Department of Health to educate children about proper nutrition, a promising project to help children become healthier in more ways than one.
I, for one, could attest to the fact that in most schools, pupils and students do not get the right nutrition. In our school canteen before, most of the food stuff sold there are usually junk food. Even if there are nutritious foods available in the canteen, students still prefer junk food because they come out very often in TV commercials and because the students do not realize the importance choosing the right food to ensure good nutrition. Even at home, no matter how my parents would try to make me eat vegetables, I still prefer to eat just meat. My mother had to be more creative in presenting nutritious food to us.
Indeed, there is a need to raise the consciousness of students and school administrators about proper nutrition. Although this is already taught in school, I salute Kraft Cheez Whiz for intensifying the campaign for better nutrition.
Together with fellow Davao Bloggers- Leah, Kevin, Rock Jhunn, Blogie and Jun, and several media men from print, radio and television, I witnessed this noble cause through a program slated last July 17, 2010 at Buhangin Elementary School- Buhangin, Davao City, which was presented by the Department of Health and Expressions School Supplies Shop.
Hosted by Diwa ng Davao 2010, a bench model, a colleague, Samantha de Leon, the program started with a doxology performed by Cherubin’s Group, followed by the National Anthem and a welcome sound from Buhangin Elementary School Drum and Lyre Corps.
Different forms of contests conducted, which were filled with fun, creativity and learning. These activities were a perfect avenue for grade school pupils to appreciate the significance of good nutrition and an opportunity to learn more and share what they have learned with others.
Different groups vied for the first place for different challenging competitions namely Speech Choir, On-the-Spot Essay Writing Contest, Sandwich Art Making, Jarchitecture and Cheer dance Competition.
Looking at the kids doing the activities made me recall my grade school days, too. During the nutrition month, we also had several activities like poster and slogan making. I could still remember that I had so much fun, too, during that time. I could see from the kids that they were really enjoying the activity. I am sure that through those activities, they will realize that they have to start taking care of themselves by choosing to eat nutritious food.
In partnership with Department of Health and Expression School Supplies Shop, it was a worthwhile experience to urge students a sense of responsibility to enhance good nutrition.
